AN ABANDONED 17TH CENTURY COURTYARD BECOMES THE SPACE FOR CONTEMPORARY LIVING.
The purpose of the project is the restoration of a portion of a dilapidated 17th century courtyard, in the historical centre of Varese. The project aimed to conserve the natural characteristics of the building while adapting it to contemporary housing needs, especially in terms of the quality of natural materials, energy saving and use of renewable energy sources.
The distinctive features of the project are: the restoration of the original stonework, the total renovation of the attics and roofs with added wooden structures, the insulation of walls and roofs, introduction of geothermal heating, underfloor heating and an electrical home automation system, new terraces in steel and wood. Building materials are all bio-ecological: the wood used is FSC certified and treated with natural paints, insulators are natural (brown cork and wood fiber), the plaster is natural hydraulic lime; floors are in oiled oak wood.
